A necessary allegiance

hawksIt’s impossible to escape sport in this country and, after a while, you get to think that maybe it would be OK to at least notionally support a team or two. My oldest allegiance is to Hawthorn. I remember sitting as a little boy on my grandfather’s veranda, listening with my grandfather and uncle to a radio broadcast of a Hawthorn game. I think it may have been the first semi-final of the 1957 season, when Hawthorn 10-11-71 defeated Carlton 6-12-48 on 31 August. As I was born close to Hawthorn, I decided to be a supporter! But I don’t think I ever got to go to a game, as we lived a long way from the city.

There are so many competitions; most interesting are cricket and soccer (international football).
