The Earl of Dumbarton

In May 2018 HM The Queen made HRH Prince Harry of Wales to be Duke of Sussex, Earl of Dumbarton and Baron Kilkeel.

Dumbarton, on the north bank of the River Clyde, to the west of Glasgow was founded in the fifth century and was once the capital of the ancient Kingdom of Strathclyde. Dumbarton Castle has been both a royal residence and a fortress. Dumbarton was a Royal Burgh between 1222 and 1975. George Douglas, a younger son of the first Marquess of Douglas, was created the first Earl of Dumbarton in 1675, in recognition of his military service. On George’s death at St German-en-Laye in France, his son, also George, became the second Earl. The title had been extinct since the second earl died in 1749.

Dunbartonshire is the ancestral home of my Scottish forbears, especially the village of Rhu. So I was pleased with Her Majesty’s decision.
